Metals Guide
Now that you’ve considered the 4Cs of your diamond, the setting of your engagement ring or other fine jewelry is just as important. Here’s a quick overview of the precious metals that we offer.
Let’s touch on karat first. At Gemonay, we offer 14k and 18 k yellow, white, and rose gold, and platinum.
The difference between 14K and 18K gold is how much true gold is present. 24k = 100% gold, so 18k = 75% gold, and 14k = 58.3% gold. To create other colors, pure gold is mixed with other metals and thus creates white, yellow, rose gold, or platinum.
Gold is a soft metal, therefore, the more true gold that is present, the softer the jewelry will be. For instance, 14k has less karats of gold thus it will be a bit more durable. This is something to consider if you’re someone who’s very active or works with your hands a lot as you’ll want something that’s less likely to be damaged.
Yellow Gold
We offer 14k and 18k yellow gold.
Gold is the most timeless and classic metal for jewelry. Traditionally, engagement and wedding bands are made from yellow gold or white gold. Yellow gold had its peak popularity in the 90s.
Gold is naturally yellow in color, but its natural warmth is enhanced when alloy metals such as silver or copper are added.
Yellow gold is also the most hypoallergenic of all gold types.
White Gold
We offer 14k and 18k white gold.
White gold is the most popular color for engagement rings. It’s a perfect option for someone who tends to wear more silver and wants a classic, timeless piece.
To create the white color, gold is mixed with palladium and silver or with nickel, copper, and zinc. White gold also needs to be coated with platinum or rhodium to improve whiteness and add durability and shine.
White gold jewelry will occasionally need to be re‐dipped after the coating wears awa
Rose Gold
We offer 14k and 18 k rose gold.
Rose gold is a pretty, modern alternative to the traditional colors. It is the most popular color among millennial couples as they look to stand out.
Rose gold can range from red rose to pink gold shades. To create the pink color of rose gold, pure gold is combined with copper and silver. The more copper added to the alloy, the rosier the gold will appear.
Rose gold does not need to be dipped or coated as the color is pure through. It's not considered hypoallergenic and does require more polishing than other golds to maintain its shine.
Platinum
Platinum is a bright white metal thirty times rarer than gold. Platinum is four times more durable than gold, doesn’t tarnish, and is hypoallergenic! Platinum is a great choice if you’re looking for an extremely durable ring that lasts a lifetime.
Intricate engravings can look sharper and more precise in platinum because it’s so strong and hard, and the white metal enhances the beauty of diamonds and gemstones.
Platinum contains no pure gold. When used in jewelry, it's usually mixed with similar metals — iridium, palladium, ruthenium, rhodium, or osmium. For a piece of jewelry to be labeled as platinum, it must have a purity of at least 90% platinum.
